Australia is my favourite destination in the whole world. Covering 7.69 million square kilometres, Australia is the largest island in the world, but the smallest continent in the world and the only continent in the world that is governed as a single country.

I'd never been to Jersey before. I guess I saw it as a more mature person’s holiday, but I couldn't have been more wrong. The beaches are stunning, the weather a couple of degrees warmer than mainland UK, the food amazing (especially the seafood), the nightlife vibrant and only 30 to 55 mins away by air from the UK depending on where you are based or an easy ferry journey from Weymouth or Poole if you're not a fan of flying.

We left Southampton airport on a sunny Friday morning, flying with Flybe on the 30 minute travelling time. Met at St Helier airport by Waverly Travel, the driver gave us some local information and hints and tips as we made our way on the 15 minute transfer to the Radisson Blu Hotel on the St Helier waterfront. Our room wasn't ready so we had lunch in Tiffin Tea House where the service was excellent, the food was excellent and the views over the mariner and Elizabeth Castle were beautiful. We had a relaxed Friday afternoon and evening, taking walks around the marina and the St Helier Beach. Saturday was to be our day of exploring this beautiful island.

Here is a local press release after the Travel Counsellors Annual Conference in Telford last weekend:

Winchester based travel professional Kate Self is flying high after being personally invited to join fellow colleagues from across the globe to celebrate the success of their travel business’ growth at a star-studded event in Telford.

Kate, who is one of over 1,250 travel agents worldwide who run their own business with the support of leading independent travel company Travel Counsellors, was invited to attend the special event at Telford’s International Centre as a reward for her dedication to providing her customers with the highest levels of personal service.

Kate was joined by over 500 fellow Travel Counsellors from seven countries for the largest travel company conference in the UK, which commenced with a highly entertaining set from renowned welsh comedian Rob Brydon. The event featured an array of first-class entertainment including songs from The Jersey Boys and chart-topping boyband McFly.

Hosted by TV presenter Amanda Lamb, Travel Counsellors’ conference provided Kate with all the latest company developments and future plans. The event saw over 170 suppliers exhibiting at a dedicated ‘Pow Wow’ session where Kate was able to meet directly with representatives from a host of tourist boards, hotels and airlines to learn first-hand about their products and destinations.

During her two-night stay in Telford, Kate heard from a collection of special guest speakers including renowned business woman and apprentice star Karren Brady who gave a unique and powerful insight into her rise to success and the key ingredients to achieving your business goals. There was also an awe-inspiring and highly motivational presentation from entrepreneur and ‘professional adventurer’ Debra Searle MBE who spoke of her incredible journey as she single handily rowed across the Atlantic Ocean against all odds, highlighting how we can overcome obstacles, both personally and professionally, to achieve success.

Kate commented, “I had an incredible time at the conference in Telford. We were updated on the company’s future plans in business sessions from senior management and given insightful travel news and tips for the year ahead. It was also a truly motivational experience as I took so much advice from the inspirational speakers. I am eager to utilise all I have learnt to benefit my customer’s needs.”

Kate adds; “When running my own travel business it is imperative to focus on the personal side, always putting the customer first by going the extra mile to satisfy their needs. My business is built on creating relationships with my customers and showing that I care. I am proud of the growth and success of my business over the past year and would like to thank my customers for their loyalty and support.”

Fred Olsen is a cruise line that has been around for much longer than I had thought. The company has history going back as far as 1848 when a young shipmaster called Fredrik Christian Olsen entered shipowning on his own account. His earliest vessels were wooden schooners of little more than 50 gross tons.

Today, Fred Olsen has four ships. The Balmoral, Boudicca, Black Watch and Braemar. My journey was on the Balmoral where I joined it part way through a Baltic Cruise in Gdynia in Poland to then sail through the Kiel Canal back to Southampton over three nights.

We flew from London to Gdansk via Copenhagen with SAS who offered a comfortable flight with complimentary tea and coffee and food and other drinks available for purchase onboard. The flights departed on time and the crew were polite and helpful.

With so many stories in the press about struggling travel agents and online travel companies, I thought I would share some testimonials from my clients about the service they have received from me:

Kate is a lovely lady, and brilliant at her job. She has helped us on various occasions, and has always come up with excellent holiday packages. She is very professional as well as friendly and helpful. We would not consider going back to a regular High street travel shop at all; why would we when we always get a smile from our friendly and professional Kate Self.
